At its Berlin event, Flip Forward, Flip, a German-based HR deskless worker platform, announced that it had raised an extension to its 2022 Series A round. This brings the total capital Flip has raised to over $60 million.
Three years ago, Flip raised $30 million in the round led by HV Capital and Notion Capital, with existing investors Calvary Ventures and LEA Partners also participating.
This week, the HR tech company has added a further $28 million also from HV, Notion and LEA.
For Flip, the fact that its same investors as the original Series A is a real vote of confidence; they’ve seen what the scaleup has achieved over the past few years, and now they are going all in.
UNLEASH was in Berlin for Flip Forward.
Speaking on stage, Flip CEO and Co-Founder Benedikt Brand (né Ilg) shared the exciting news.
He shared it will provide an “opportunity to double down on AI”, enable Flip to transform to become truly AI-first, and ensure that the company’s new AI platform, Flip Intelligence, is “the future of AI for the frontline”.
Commenting on the Series A extension, Nils Seele, Partner at LEA Partners, said: “In the age of AI, the way we access and interact with business processes is fundamentally changing.
“Long gone are the days of fragmented tools, it’s now time to focus on intelligent bundling in a central platform.
The Flip team is working on this vision with impressive energy and expertise. That’s why we’re doubling down on our commitment. We want to enable every employee to work in a radically better way.”
A bright, AI and global future for Flip?
At Flip Forward, UNLEASH had the opportunity to sit down with Brand, as well as his CPTO Luke Talbot, to dig into the Series A extension more.
When asked why now was the time to raise a Series A extension, Brand said it was now or never.
Flip doesn’t want to just follow the trend; the German scaleup wants to really shape and define what the future of work looks like, particularly for the frontline.
“There’s a huge difference between those companies who [say] they’re AI first”, and those that actually are.
For Brand, it is not about retrofitting AI into the product, instead everything must start with AI.
Talbot adds that there’s a lot of noise around AI at the moment – however, a lot of it isn’t practical for the frontline.
“The time is now to really help define how this should look for the future of work, especially for the future of frontline”, and that will define who Flip is as an AI-first company.
It is no surprise, therefore, that $28 million funding will be spent mainly on AI research & development.
However, it will also be used internationalization to continue to grow its customer base outside of Europe, according to Brand. Existing global clients include Ben & Jerry’s Australia, Sixt Norway, the Australian Football League, and the School of Rock in the US.
On the R&D point, Talbot also tells UNLEASH that the money will help the scaleup to have “optionality”.
“It allows us to experiment and be flexible” – AI technology is moving so fast, so Flip needs to continue to invest in its products and technology if it wants to lead the way.
